Lucy Stephens

I qualified as a physiotherapist in 2009 from Sheffield Hallam University and worked locally in the NHS in different settings before specialising in critical care and surgery. I started teaching in Higher Education at the University in 2015 as an Associate Lecturer and in 2017 became the first Lecturer Practitioner working in acute care working in Sheffield. I moved into a permanent role at the University as a Lecturer and completed my Post-graduate certificate in Teaching. More recently I have completed an MSc in Advancing Professional Practice.

I am passionate about leading and driving the Undergraduate physiotherapy curriculum and the profession forward. I have experience in teaching across the physiotherapy programmes and more widely across the allied health professions curricula in our integrated care curriculum. I have led a number of specialist modules and continue to guide and teach the cardiovascular respiratory content across our different courses. I am interested in growing the diversity of the physiotherapy profession and am currently involved in a number of projects and research which aim to explore the experiences of minority ethnic students joining the physiotherapy workforce and strategies to improve this. I continue to practise in a private capacity seeing patients with complex cardiovascular respiratory problems and rehabilitation needs in the community.

Course introduction

Welcome to the BSc Physiotherapy course. We are really excited to welcome you into the Physiotherapy and Allied Health community here at Hallam (SHU). Our course is designed to equip you with the knowledge and skills required to become a qualified physiotherapist.

The course has a range of modules to enable you to develop specific physiotherapeutic skills and also skills for working in different healthcare settings with other professions. The course consists of mainly practical based teaching but with lectures and seminars to underpin your understanding so that you can apply this knowledge practically. Students enjoy the varied topics we teach and the practical elements are definitely their favourite sessions. There are different types of assessment which help you to thrive and demonstrate these aspects in building your capabilities as a student physiotherapist.

High levels of professionalism are expected both when you practise as a student and when you qualify and we will support you to develop this ethos and skills via completion of practice experience placements during the course. Student self-directed study and practice is expected throughout the course to ensure you are continuing to progress towards qualification. We will ensure you are supported along your journey by the course team, your allocated academic advisor, our student support services and the employability and careers team. We hope you enjoy your time studying with us.
