Parents, guardians and support networks

Moving away from home for the first time

This will be the first time living away from home for many students.

As a parent, guardian, or supporter, you can continue to encourage your person to be independent and forward-thinking. One key way is listening and helping them identify how to resolve a situation themselves.

For example, if they called with an issue regarding their flatmate, then ideally you would encourage them to talk to the individual to see if they can resolve their differences. Difficult conversations are just one of the skills developed in independent living. You're in a position to guide them through the issue rather than handling it for them.

There are things you can prepare together to ensure a smooth transition to university. Talk through the scenarios on the next slide and it will become clear the areas you both can start to work on!

Top Tip:  If you are moving into University of Nottingham accommodation, check out the fantastic events and support offered by your Residential Experience Team (ResX) available 7 days a week, from the day you arrive, until the day you leave.
