Moving from across the world: Talking points

You can download a PDF of this page to allow you and your supporter to continue to prepare outside of the platform.

  • British culture is what makes the UK so unique however, it may be a bit of a shock when you first move here. There are plenty of videos on our YouTube channel  that will help you know what to expect.

  • You may be able to help your student more than you know with culture shock. If you have been to the UK or any foreign country before, you may have experienced similar feelings. Share what you felt and how you overcame it. If not, do you know someone who may be able to talk to your student and give some advice?

  • Whilst in home comforts, you can plan and prepare a lot to ease the transition. Have you followed or been following the international student checklist? If not, now is the time to have a look.

  • It may be overwhelming the number of things your student needs to prepare before arriving in the UK. Support them to complete the tasks which will make it easier when arriving at the University of Nottingham.

  • When you are across the world, the way you communicate with your supporter will change. Could you set up a monthly phone or video call? Use free services like WhatsApp or Zoom to avoid charges (all you need is a Wi-Fi or data connection).

  • Being across the world, your student will look forward to hearing from home. How much communication are you both expecting? Making a plan before they leave can be reassuring for both of you.

  • Food is always a good way to make a place feel like home! Have you looked into your area for international supermarkets and restaurants?  Are there any family recipes you can try cooking while you're at university? It is also a fantastic way to meet new people.

  • What recipes can you share with your student that they would be able to cook in the UK? If they are already a top chef, why not look at sending a food parcel of all their favourite ingredients once a term.

Here are some other useful resources:

  • Global Buddies - ‘Buddy’ is another word for friend, and that’s exactly what Global Buddies is about, making friends! If you sign up, you’ll be partnered with a mentor when you first arrive on campus (a current student who will show you everything Nottingham has to offer).

Top Tip:  Look at what date you arrive in the UK. Being here a few days early is great for jet lag, but many activities and services will not begin until Welcome Week on Saturday 21st September. If you do arrive early, plan activities in the city centre and message other incoming students to make fun plans.
